Building Life Leaders

Our OU

Eight Waves invests in the lives of children, youth and families who live in under- resourced communities by working together, building the healthy support systems they need to thrive, and empowering them to create lasting change in their own lives and communities.

We envision a community where every child experiences a variety of positive and encouraging opportunities. These opportunities provide a sense of belonging and allow each child the ability to achieve his or her full potential both individually and as a member of the community.

Key

We know that encouraging a love of learning early on is key to improving mental health, well-being and literacy in America and ensuring our children's success in both school and life. That's why we offer a productive children's program to under-resourced children, families, and schools in Central Florida.

Outreach

Eight Waves' curriculum in reading intervention helps children stay on track developmentally and increase their world through reliance and an ability to confidently read.

Alarming Literacy

Did you know?

Florida

has the third-highest percentage of adults lacking basic literacy skills

61%

of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children

46%

of Florida's students entering 4th grade do not read proficiently

1 in 4

American children grow up not learning how to read

45 million

Americans are functionally illiterate and cannot read above a fifth-grade level

Students

not reading at grade level by the end of the third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school–six times less likely for students from low-income families

These are some of the most important statistics from the National Institute for Literacy, National Center for Adult Literacy, The Literacy Company, and U.S. Census Bureau that underscore the critical need to address illiteracy in the United States.
